This morning I found this email waiting for me in my inbox;
“I have a porn addiction, I have had it for 13 years, I have been ocd basically it is very hard for me to get rid of, it has destroyed my heart, please ask God to give me love for him in my heart so porn dies down”
I am so thankful that this man has reached out. He understands that he has become addicted to porn and has been this way for 13 years. He realizes that porn has entangled him and is eating away at his heart and love for God. That is what porn and sexual sin do. They destroy our love for God. They destroy our ability to love others and ourselves. It leaves us with an all-consuming desire for self-satisfaction at the expense of others.
So, let me ask you a question? Why do you think that when you became a believer in Christ God the Father sent God the Spirit to dwell inside your body as it says in Ephesians 1;
“In Him (Christ), you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.”
You were sealed in Christ with the Holy Spirit. God the Spirit entered your body and dwells inside of you. Seems a bit of a drastic measure does it not? God is not just “giving us a little help”. This is not a half-time pep talk to get you ready for the second half of your life. This is literally God Himself joining you in your body. He has moved in and remains there forever.
What amazes me is how instead of us seeing and realizing that God Himself is available to us every second of every day, we are so focused on our sin that the Spirit of God is eclipsed by our obsessive-compulsive focus on our sin. Last week we saw our puny moon almost completely block out our sun even though the sun is 400 times larger than the moon.
The answer to the battle that all of us know so well, this battle against our flesh, will never be won by our own power or strength. It is won by the Spirit. It is won when we daily surrender all of ourselves to God as a living sacrifice. It is won when we ask the Spirit to fill and empower us to walk in the Spirit. And it is won by us staying in contact with one another and calling each other the moment we sense another temptation and eclipse is coming upon us.
Don’t cower to sin’s call. Cry up to God. Cry out to someone who can help you. Cry out to your support team so that you can stop crying about another failure.
