Your Need to Understand Mercy, Forgiveness and Grace

These three words are core words to understanding God our Father and Jesus our Lord.  They are precious words that we should embrace and understand.  The Bible makes it clear that we are saved by Grace through Faith.  God has forgiven us all our sins, past present and future.  Also, He shows us mercy every day.  So, what do they mean?

Let’s start with mercy.  Mercy is not giving someone the punishment that they deserve.  Do the crime and do the time as they say.  However, Mercy is if you do the crime then you don’t do the time.  Someone decides that they will show you mercy … they decide to not give you the punishment you deserve.  Every day you and I experience the mercies of God as He has made us His children and does not discipline for every sin.  Don’t you love Mercy???

Forgiveness is setting someone free from the punishment they deserve.  Sounds a lot like mercy but forgiveness starts with mercy but then decides to forget what was done and not hold it over someone’s head.  It means there is no grudge … no stockpiling of sins and waiting to dump them all out on you at once.  It means washing those sins away.  Choosing to not remember those sins anymore.

“THIS IS THE COVENANT THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THEM AFTER THOSE DAYS, SAYS THE LORD: I WILL PUT MY LAWS UPON THEIR HEART, AND ON THEIR MIND I WILL WRITE THEM,” He then says, “AND THEIR SINS AND THEIR LAWLESS DEEDS I WILL REMEMBER NO MORE.” Hebrews 10:16

Even though God never forgets anything and knows everything He chooses forgiveness for all your sins and makes it a covenant promise.

Now Grace … best of all.  If mercy is not giving us what we deserve … and we wipe our brow and let out a huge sigh of relief … Grace goes WAY beyond that.  Mercy withholds or cancels the punishment while Grace pours out unlimited blessings.

God not only chooses to not give us what we deserve … punishment … but goes infinitely further and give us everything.  He gives us forgiveness and heaven.  He gives us the Spirit and eternal life.  He gives us an inheritance that will never perish, spoil or fade.

If forgiveness is canceling all your debt and mercy is continuing to show us kindness as we struggle along … Grace is Christmas!!!  Grace is the presence and gifts of God every day and ultimately eternal life in heaven with Him Forever.

Today … think of the Mercy, Forgiveness and Grace God has given to you. I know how guilt and shame have been beating up on you because you keep failing to stop acting out sexually.  We will get to dealing with that but the 180 Recovery Ministry is built upon the solid biblical foundation of God’s Mercy, Forgiveness and Grace.
