Meditate or Medicate?

We are going to continue this theme on using Biblical Meditation to interrupt the addiction cycle and choosing a positive step, meditation, instead of continuing in the negative step of medication by using sex.

Let’s say you are being tempted, if you can imagine that, like was it 2 minutes ago?  Anyway, you are triggered or there have been some lingering thoughts or images that you have been toying with in your head.  They are calling you and your brain is starting to get revved up wanting the chemicals that sex releases.  Are you going to meditate or medicate?

Normally at that moment we are used to thinking with the brain below our belt.  However, we know where that has led us thousands of times and we really do want to change.  So here are some verses I make myself remember, meditate on them, and then pray.

Let’s start with what Jesus said;

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.  If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.”

Serious words from our Lord calling us to not think lustfully about another person.  I wonder why He said that?  Maybe it is because that other human being is created in the image of God just like you are.  They are not some delicious food to be consumed like a Snickers bar. They are a real person.  They have a father and a mother, a sister or a brother.  And being created in the image of God they are worthy of honor and respect.

We have no right to degrade another person by making them a consumable to be devoured and tossed aside.  And so that is how I pray …

“Lord, thank you that you created that person and they are beautiful.  They are made in your image and worth of my honor and respect.  Holy Spirit please fill me right now and enable me to worship you and not kneel at the altar of sexual idolatry again.  Help me to walk in the Spirit and not fulfill the desires of the flesh.”

Then, you need to add action to your prayer.  That action is simple.  Paul says it to Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:22;

“Flee youthful lusts.”

Get away from the computer.  Put your smartphone in you dumbpocket.  Walk away from that person and snap the rubber band on your wrist.  And to reinforce this take your smartphone out of your dumbpocket and call in your support team.

I will also add another verse in the meditation time.  It is;

“But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.” Ephesians 5:3

If You Are Straining to See

You Probably Should Flee!
