I Believe, Help Me With My Unbelief!

Have you ever been the smartest guy in the room?  You understand something because of your knowledge and experience and everyone else seem as dumb as rocks?  With your experience and education, you have understanding that others are missing and it can be frustrating.  Imagine how many times Jesus experienced this.

So, Jesus, Peter, James, and John are coming down from the Mount of Transfiguration.  These three disciples have just witnessed Jesus being transformed into His glorified state, Moses and Elijah showed up and they heard the voice of the Father say; “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to Him.”

When they arrive back with the other disciples there is a crowd and people are arguing.  It is probably the same situation with the father and his son who has a demon that causes him to throw himself into the fire to burn him or into the water to drown him.  The other disciples could not cast out this demon and Jesus has these words to say to them.

“You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”

When the boy arrived the demon inside of him wants to show off so the boy fell to the ground and rolled around foaming at the mouth. Upon seeing this the father says to Jesus;

“If you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”

Just a note here, you should never say to Jesus, “If you can …” because it is never a matter of “if.”  Jesus can do everything and anything He wants to do.  He spoke and created the universe in 6 days. He is God and He can do whatever He wants to do. So, Jesus responds,

“‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”

Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed,

“I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

Those are awesome words coming from the father.  It reveals the reality that all of us have felt at one time or another.  We believe that Jesus can heal us from our sexual brokenness but at the same time, we do not believe it because we have not seen it happen.  We beg and plead for God to remove our appetite for sex because it has gotten totally out of control and some are acting out every day.

I think we can boil that down to saying we believe, but we need help with our unbelief.  We believe that He can do it but we do not believe that He will do it.  Or perhaps deep down we do not really want to stop.  Perhaps we have not hit rock bottom, but you will.  You will get caught and your life will blow up and you will feel anger and regret like you have never felt before.

There can be no question that it is God’s will that we stop using sex as an escape.  1 Corinthians 6 says,

“Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.”

It is time for you to realize and believe that your life filled with the Spirit is better than sex.  I know it will not bring the instant pleasure that sex brings but as we walk daily being filled with the Spirit, offering ourselves to God, and putting on the full armor of God within our Support Team the healing will come.
